Voluntary Greenhouse Gas Registry As awareness about the risks of climate change rises and global limits are increasingly set on greenhouse gas emissions, organizations and businesses are beginning to recognize the importance of calculating and registering their greenhouse gas emissions and regularly reporting these data to the authorities. Israel has initiated a pilot project for a voluntary greenhouse gas registry which was formally launched on July 1, 2010. Participating organizations will report on their greenhouse gas emissions once a year, with the first report on 2010 emissions due on June 30, 2011. The voluntary greenhouse gas registry in Israel is expected to facilitate emissions reductions by: - Creating a database on greenhouse gas emissions of organizations and industrial plants.
- Managing business risks which may arise from greenhouse gas emissions and identifying opportunities for emissions reductions.
- Facilitating public reporting and participation in voluntary reporting programs.
- Preparing for mandatory reporting and reduction systems in the future.
- Participating in carbon trading markets in the future.
The registration protocol was prepared by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and by the S. Neaman Institute of the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology. The protocol includes guidelines for mapping, quantifying and reporting greenhouse gas emissions in Israel. For further information, including forms for participation, please see our Hebrew website.
