Israel's Mediterranean and Red Sea coastlines, stretching about 190 kilometers and 14 kilometers respectively, are among the country's most valuable natural assets. They are characterized by a rich diversity of natural, environmental, cultural and economic assets. Their protection - whether from the adverse impacts of pollution or from unwise development - is a national priority.

Israel deals with all aspects of marine pollution: accidental and emergency oil and chemical spills from ships or terminals; polluting discharges from industrial or municipal land-based sources; dumping of waste at sea; and litter in the sea or on beaches. In order to reduce pollution and prevent significant damage to the marine environment, numerous activities are taken, including: prevention, abatement, law enforcement, and scientific research and monitoring.
