Updated: 10/01/2005

MAP is an action-oriented cooperative effort involving 21 countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea as well as the European Union. MAP is run by a Coordinating Unit based in Athens and comprises a Mediterranean Commission on Sustainable Development, a MED POL Programme for the Assessment and Control of Pollution, six Regional Activity Centres (RACs) and a Programme for the Protection of Coastal Historic Sites. MAP is supported by a legal system based on the Barcelona Convention and six protocols on specific subjects. Israel has been an active member of the organization since its creation in 1975 and has contributed to all components of the action plan: legal, socio-economic and scientific.
