Much like the educational system, sustainable development links the environment, the economy and the society. It is for this very reason that the educational system should be responsible for spearheading the move toward sustainable development in accordance with the guidelines set in Agenda 21 of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (1992): "Both formal and non-formal education are indispensable to changing people's attitudes so that they have the capacity to assess and address their sustainable development concerns."
The sustainable development approach recognizes that short-term projects are insufficient to instill lifelong environmental values. What is needed is a long-term educational process in which students, teachers and school administrations impart a school culture which is based on sustainable development principles.
