Since its establishment in 1948, Israel’s population has increased nearly eightfold – mainly as a result of large-scale immigration. Average population growth in the second half of the 1990s was 2.5% in comparison to 5%-6% in the early 1990s. In the area north of Beersheba, Israel is now one of the world’s most densely populated countries.
